THE RAGE

THE RAGE 13 Kensington, 416-588-5177. Rating: NNNNN

The Rage ‘s Sarah Campbell has developed a well-known knack for luring the best and brightest of Toronto’s young, local clothing and accessories designers onto her two-year-old Kensington Market racks. Her shop is home to creative and well-constructed emerging lines, including SNAP (cotton tank tunics with ruched waistbands) and Jenna Rose (colourful screened-canvas belts).

The talented Paris transplant Mathieu Missiaen is currently the toast of the city’s crafty dressers. Campbell hired him to paint the outside of the store but after flipping through his design portfolio set him to work on a stash of vintage pumps. His pop-coloured, graffiti-style graphics elevate the heels to high, artful and fun fashion.

Missiaen’s fan base has grown beyond the packs of teen shoppers currently swarming the store on their first days of summer vacation. Through The Rage’s new Etsy site (therage.etsy.com), the shoes have received customer and blogger attention in China, Spain and Argentina. The Rage picks: Missiaen uses bright orange oil-based marker to scribble “Real French” on a pair of retro white heels, $120 Paper People Clothing ‘s Susan top comes in hand-dyed seafoam and deep purple, $49 Don Johnson, John Travolta and the Hoff himself appear on Heartbeat ‘s Hunks buttons, $10.

Look for: The Rage’s second store CD featuring indie acts like Kids on TV and the Two Koreas , launching this month with proceeds going to Sketch (www.sketch.ca).

Hours: Monday to Saturday 11 am to 7 pm, Sunday noon to 6 pm.
