The real Joe

There was a time when watching a Joe Fresh show was one big tease.

The standout runway pieces, from down stuffed skating skirts to leather LBDs, only appeared on the catwalk to build brand buzz and not to actually tip you off to what would be on the racks at your local Loblaws next season.

That’s starting to change though. When the ever-growing chic-on-the-cheap label opened its newest Toronto store at Queen and Portland last week, many of the standout Fall 2011 catwalk pieces, including the fringe mini skirts and gilded brogues we included our fashion issue, were there.

So we watched last night’s spring show with more hope than ever that its neoprene tunics and orange soled oxfords will be in stores in a few months. Other crowd-pleasing pieces included parachute maxi skirts in juicy hues, short sleeve shirting with colour blocked collars and men’s blazers in paisley and geometric prints.

Other shows on the rainy Wednesday schedule included Pink Tartan (designer Kimberly Newport-Mimran showed a great polka dot trench, red satin separates and mod shifts), LABEL and the week’s most over-the-top presentation by rug company Korhani where models walked in Alice in Wonderland-themed get-ups fashioned entirely from carpet.
