The skinny on FAT

Rating: NNNNN

Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion Week (www.getfat.ca) returns to the Distillery District (55 Mill) April 9 to 11 with photography, video installations, performances and live DJs ($20, advance $15 at the Rage, 13 Kensington Magpie, 884 Queen West and Lounge, 155 John). The big draw is fashion presentations by emerging and established designers with an alt edge, including NOW’s first runway turn on April 10 with a MyStyle catwalk show. We’re not just tooting our own horn, though. Here are five FAT talents whose dress will subversively impress.

Designer: Decadent Designs

Show: April 9 at 11 pm

The skinny: Goth fashion and Victorian-era corsetry inspire Olga Lipnitski’s Decadent Designs collection. Lace and PVC take on a luxe, modern look in high-drama gowns ordered through her online boutique.

Designer: Dilly Daisy

Show: April 10 at 8:40 pm

The skinny: One-time electrical engineer Dee-Dee Shkreli abandoned her profession to build her bold and hyper-colourful collection. Cute vintage-inspired prints and solids mix and match on ruffled-sleeved tanks and two-in-one camisole shirts.

Designer: CMichelon

Show: April 10 at 10 pm

The skinny: Clarice Michelon focuses on knitwear, hand-knitting and crocheting wool, cashmere and alpaca in grey, charcoal and blue into intricate sweater tunics and dresses.

Designer: Krane

www.kranedesign.com

Show: April 10 at 11 pm

The skinny: Krane’s last menswear show starred Toronto model twins Nicolas and Daniel Pilaprat switching in and out of waxed cotton motorcycle jackets and duffle coats. This season, look for new tricks like brace and neck tie accessories made from basket-woven elastics.

Designer: UsThemWe

www.usthemwe.com

Show: April 11 at 9:50

The skinny: FAT alumna Jennifer Lopez’s new UsThemWe collection transitions her tattooed gangsteress look of seasons past into sharply tailored women’s and men’s pieces inspired by classic literary dandies Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
