Tiny Treasures

Rating: NNNNN

WHO Suzanne Carlsen, www.suzannecarlsen.ca.

SIGNATURE PRODUCT There’s something marvellous about design made in miniature. Carlsen creates diminutive pins, cufflinks and shadow-boxed dioramas incorporating tiny tufts of patterned fabric embroidered with telephone booths, spaceships and finely detailed cityscapes.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY “I have always worked tiny,” says Carlsen. “That way I can really focus on details.” Those details include quirky thread illustrations exploring urban issues like green roofs, wind energy and transportation.

NEW WORKS Carlsen has started a series of custom house portraits capturing the shape and personality of clients’ homes in silver and hand stitching on cotton. Other pieces are part of her Trophies And Medals For The Model Citizen show, on until December 31 at Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West).

WHERE TO BUY IT $250 to $500 for custom house portraits. Look for work at David Kaye Gallery (1092 Queen West, 416-532-9075), Made (867 Dundas West, 416-607-6384) and at the Made show at the Gladstone Hotel (1214 Queen West) December 15 and 16 (www.modernartdesignexhibit.com).
