WHIMSY 501 Runnymede 416-763-3865 www.whimsystore.com Rating: NNNNN

The corner of Runnymede and Annette is an organic oasis at the northern border of Bloor West Village. The Coffee Bar (514 Annette, 416-532-7749) brews organic, fair trade roasts, Butcher by Nature (520 Annette, 416-241-8187) cuts strictly natural steaks, and Wine Tradition (540 Annette, 416-769-0006) lets you ferment your own organic vintage. Tiffany Thornton‘s Whimsy fashion and accessories boutique, which stocks almost entirely fair trade items, fits in perfectly with her progressive neighbours.

Jewellery takes centre stage in the colourful storefront. Teardrop-shaped wire earrings wrapped in lime, kelly green and orange thread dangle next to chunky wood beadnecklaces that frame giant turquoise pendants. Thornton sources her eclectic goods from co-ops in Thailand (bamboo mini-briefcases), Bali (beaded stretch belts) and Nepal (light summer cotton tops and skirts).

Colourful Japanese Daruma-head sculptures and printed rice paper cards add sustainable style to your home.

Whimsy picks: Misope‘s silk empire-waist tunic is bordered with bright red bands, $39.99 dress your neck in Nepalese turquoise beads, $18 green and natural cottons double up for a layered tank look, $34.

Look for: The tail end of Whimsy’s winter clearance sale, with most seasonal leftovers priced at $10 and $15.

Hours: Tuesday noon to 5 pm, Wednesday-Thursday and Saturday to 6 pm, Friday to 7 pm, Sunday to 4 pm.
