WONDERPENS 906 Dundas West, 647-461-2426, wonderpens.ca

In this day and age when you can download cloud-based sketchbook apps, and even post-its have been digitized, who needs a handsome notebook and a beautiful pen? Many of us, it seems, judging by the instant interest in online stationery store turned writing boutique Wonderpens.

Launched earlier this month by Jon (banker by day) and Liz (moonlighting Grade 7 teacher) Chan, the shop celebrates an enduring love of putting pen or pencil to paper, and pays special attention to its extensive selection of fountain pens and ink.

There are also enough notebook options by the likes of Field Notes, Quo Vadis, Rhodia and Leuchtturm1917 to make an iPhone-indifferent reporter giddy.

Pack everything up in a selection of cases including colourful canvas options by Delfonics or leather versions by Life Japanese Stationery.

Wonderpens picks: Kaweco’s Sport fountain pen is a conversation starter thanks to its octagonal shape and gold finish, $23.50 Noodler’s ink comes in an ever-growing rainbow of hues, but Liz’s go-to is a deep, classic black, $12.50/90 ml Life Japanese Vermillion notebooks, like the A6 pocket-sized pad, $5, have a vintage look.

Look for: If you’re really old-school, you’ll want to pick up a new calligraphy set.

Hours: Monday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm, Saturday 11 am to 6 pm, Sunday noon to 5 pm.
