AIM FOR THE ROSES (John Bolton, Canada). 102 minutes. Rating: NNNNN

In 1976, a Canadian daredevil named Ken Carter announced he was going to jump the St. Lawrence River in a rocket-propelled Lincoln the stunt took years to put together but didn’t go quite as expected.

In 2008, Vancouver musician Mark Haney decided he was going to make a concept album about Carter’s jump. The album also took years to produce and turned out very far from what he conceived.

Aim For The Roses is John Bolton’s attempt to synthesize the two stories, finding the common ground between two very different dream projects. Part long-form music video, part archival documentary, it’s experimental and conventional at the same time: a concept movie about a concept album. It’s delightful.
