Inside Out review: SUPER AWESOME!

SUPER AWESOME! (Guy Edmonds, Matt Zeremes, Australia). 89 minutes. May 29, 9:45 pm, TIFF 1. Rating: NN

Super Awesome! isn’t. Nerdy Aussie blokes Mark (Matt Zeremes) and Gary (Guy Edmonds) have written and starred in some theatrical bombs and hits, but suddenly they get the chance to put on a musical about the importance of same-sex marriage. The hitch? They know nothing about musicals. Oh, and they’re straight.

The premise is promising, but a smug, insincere tone hobbles it. The leads attempt a Steve Coogan-Rob Brydon or Seth Rogen-Jonah Hill vibe, but they’re too slick-looking to be convincing, and their lines are unfunny.

The saving grace is Simon Burke as an aging action hero with a terrific voice who plays one of the gay leads. I’d see a musical with him. Lose the other two.
