Our Family Wedding

OUR FAMILY WEDDING (Rick Famuyiwa). 102 minutes. Opens Friday (March 12). For venues, trailers and times, see Movies. Rating: NN

Our Family Wedding offers featherweight fun on the tried-and-true theme of the chaos leading up to a wedding.[rssbreak]

The young-and-in-loves (America Ferrera and Lance Gross) have no problem with the fact that she’s Mexican and he’s African American, but their fathers hate each other, so racial slurs fly thick and fast. Tension mounts as the simple wedding morphs into a more lavish affair.

Ferrera and Gross don’t have much to do, but, like the rest of the cast, they’re competent and fully energized. As the fathers, Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia stand out for their gleeful animosity and ease in the film’s more tender moments.

The story is completely predictable, and director Rick Famuyiwa keeps things moving briskly, but he never builds his gags to laugh-out-loud levels. The goat on Viagra is woefully underused.
