Movies & TV Toronto International Film Festival 2018

TIFF review: Girl

GIRL DISC D: Lukas Dhont. Belgium. 106 min. Sep 8, 3:30 pm, TBLB 2 Sep 9, 6 pm, Scotiabank 2 Sep 16, noon, Scotiabank 1. See listing. Rating: NNNN

Dhont’s stunning debut tells the moving story of a 15-year-old beginning a physical transformation while undertaking a rigorous regimen at a top ballet academy.

With a supportive family and doctor behind her, she battles her own self-doubt and impatience with her body’s physical obstacle to the demanding dance training.

Belgian dancer Victor Polster delivers a breathtaking, star-making performance that dominates the screen. Dhont’s sensitive, empathetic direction keeps us riveted.

He deservedly won the Camera d’Or for best first feature film at Cannes this year.
