This eight-part BBC series – the sequel to its history of rock ‘n’ roll – begins with the invention of popular song and the rise of the Jewish American musical theatre in the early 20th century. The work of George Gershwin , Richard Rogers and Irving Berlin is examined, with commentary by Paul McCartney , Burt Bacharach , Keith Richards , Ray Charles and Elvis Costello . Next week: swing and the big bands. 8 pm on PBS, repeated at 2:30 am

SATYRICON (1969, D: Federico Fellini , w/ Hiram Keller and Capucine ) The impact of the maestro’s trippy sand ‘n’ sandal epic based on Petronius’s satire of the Roman cult of Priapus may be somewhat diminished on the small screen, but look closely and note an 18-year-old Richard Simmons – yes, the pudgy Sweatin’ To The Oldies diet dude – as a battle-axe-waving centurion in the food orgy sequence. 3 am on Citytv, repeated midnight Saturday
