#25. Spirits of the Dead

Rating: NNNNN

Their name conjures up pure graveyard-style melancholy, and if these Norwegian psychedelic stoner folk rockers keep up their current pace, it won’t be long before they start haunting our shores. Formed a little more than a year ago, Spirits of the Dead (June 12, El Mocambo, 10 pm) recorded their debut album (mastered by George Marino of Hendrix and Zeppelin fame) last December. It’s a collection of swirling, hazy rock that conjures up classic acts like Jefferson Airplane as well as more contemporary sounds like Queens of the Stone Age, all wrapped in a kind of mystical shroud. Good if you like a freak-out with ghosts.
