A Taste of Candy Golde

CANDY GOLDE at Club DeVille at SXSW. Rating: NNN

With Jeff Tweedy doing a run of solo shows recently, it seems only fair the other Wilco guys get to have some fun in their off time.

Wilco bassist and founding member John Stirratt along with multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, who already make a formidable duo in their Autumn Defense project, have teamed up with Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos, Nick Tremulis and Rick Rizzo of the Eleventh Day Dream in a combo called Candy Golde.

The band made their live debut at the NXNE showcase Friday night, although their pedigree earned them ready applause amongst fans who seemed to like the band before a first guitar chord was even strummed.

While Tweedy has never given Stirratt much time on the microphone outside of backups, the bassist gets to flex his vocal muscle at centre stage along side Tremulis with a 90s-sounding pub rock outfit here. He’s a strong singer, making you wonder why Tweedy doesn’t utilize him more.

Candy Golde, who have a recently-made five-song EP ready to drop, will easily appeal to Wilco fans, as their sound falls comfortably into the Minneapolis alt-country confines, but fans of Cheap Trick should probably look elsewhere.
