I have a secret fondness for some of the pretentious names given to indie rock albums. That said, ostentatious titles like Logic Can Break Your Heart and Hail To Whatever You Found In The Sunlight That Surrounds You (by the Stills and Rilo Kiley respectively) are only truly justified when the music’s good enough to back it. Winnipeg four-piece Novillero deserve to call their second album Aim Right For The Holes In Their Lives – it’s brainy, jubilant piano-centric Motowny rock with triumphant horns that reminds me of Stereolab, then Sloan, then the Unicorns (R.I.P.) and then Sarah Slean. Diverse instrumentation, airtight songwriting, and word is their live show is more fun than being stuck in a port-a-potty with Kathy Griffin. Novillero hit the Drake Friday (June 10) at 1 am.
