On his third album, Trey Songz really hits his stride as a songwriter. His style is still very hook-heavy and playful – evidenced on LOL 🙂 and Neighbors Know My Name – but he also shows a more developed, mature side, as on the moving Black Roses and the cautionary anthem (and Drake collab) Successful.

The production is top-notch, too, with almost an 80s soundtrack vibe. A few tracks sound like they could’ve been produced by DJ U-Neek of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony fame. Such slight deviations from R&B’s classic formula allow Trey Songz wiggle room to play with his multi-octave voice. This offering sets him apart from other acts and may secure his spot in the canon of bedroom crooners.
