APOCALYPTICA

Rating: NN

While the idea of “cello metal” might sound a little gimmicky, Finland’s Apocalyptica have actually progressed musically to the point where, between the distortion, the pounding drums and the guest vocal spots, it’s increasingly difficult to differentiate them from any number of other melodic/symphonic Euro-metal acts.

If the goal is mainstream acceptance, Worlds Collide should cater just fine to those tastes. The so-so vocals, by singers enlisted from Slipknot, Rammstein and Lacuna Coil, often overshadow the cellos, which sound ominous and menacing and far more “metal” than seems possible. Uneven and stylistically confusing, Collide demonstrates the band’s technical talents, but they haven’t really challenged themselves.

Apocalyptica play Wednesday (April 30) at the Phoenix.
