On paper, Vignetting The Compost looks great: high-concept acid folk meets hazy electronic, relying on nature field recordings for both ambience and inspiration. Equal parts dark Britannia revivalism and Boards of Canada.

In practice, however, the idea is over-intellectualized and without payoff. The result is a record full of beautiful, ethereal soundscapes and acoustic instrumentation that’s content to laze about rather than tell a story. And story is what you expect from titles like The Clothesline And The Silver Birch and Over The Hills And Far Away. The music soothes but doesn’t add depth to the work as a whole.
