The Bouncing Souls are tough, earnest punk fellows who rock in a manner unseen since the days of Rancid. They plow through the songs on Anchors Away in a workman-like manner, sounding sincere, angry and at times reminiscent of the Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ more aggressive moments. This is music for people who love S.E. Hinton – you know, the fights, pomade, bicycles and crying. As for me, I never liked The Outsiders all that much. Still, I’m happier when the Souls are stylish and emotional than when they’re taking meaningless ideological stances and blabbering about how “a nation’s future stands in doubt.” I feel that politics and music go together like hoboes and tuxedos – awkwardly and accompanied by a potent reek.
The Bouncing Souls play Punk-O-Rama with Hot Water Music at the Opera House Friday (August 15).
