DEL BEL at the Great Hall (1087 Queen West), tonight (Thursday, June 13), 1 am. NXNE wristband or $20; and at Creatures Creating (822 Dundas West), Saturday (June 15), midnight. NXNE wristband or $12. nxne.com
Lots of bands describe themselves as "cinematic," but Del Bel actually mean it - they were originally formed to help score a film. The sprawling Toronto band includes members from too many local acts to list, including Flowers of Hell, Do Make Say Think, L Con and Ohbijou. You could play three degrees of separation with this group and connect to every single indie band in town.
While there's a ton of instruments and players in the mix, the atmospheric songs are expertly arranged. Even at live shows you can pick out every element of the orchestration. Think melancholy torch songs played by an experimental post-rock band, evoking a dub version of country.
If you like Del Bel, also check out Olenka and the Modern Lovers at the Great Hall, tonight (Thursday, June 13), midnight, NXNE wristband or $20; or Red Mass at the Hoxton tonight (June 13), 9 pm, NXNE wristband or $20, and at Lee's Palace, Friday (June 14), 11 pm, NXNE wristband or $15.
