Did Dr. Dre start Burning Man?

We’re pretty sure that he’s not, which makes this Tumblr either great satire, or one of the more amusing conspiracy theories to ever come from a drug-addled burner. Or could it really be true that Dr Dre is behind Burning Man?

According to the anonymous author’s claims, Dre stumbled upon the Burning Man setup crew in 1995, while scouting locations for the California Love video (which definitely has a Burning Man vibe to it, although officially it was inspired by Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome).

As the story goes, the organizers were complaining that they couldn’t afford to renew their permit for the next year. At that point, there were no admission fees for the annual festival, even though it was already attracting thousands of partiers. Dre, sensing the potential for profit, set up a limited liability corporation called Black Rock City, LLC, and agreed to secretly handle paying for the permits in exchange for the right to charge admission.

The theory is that this agreement continues to this day, which means that Dre could potentially have raked in somewhere in the neighbourhood of $10 million last year before expenses.

Like we said, this is probably either a joke or a delusion, but can you imagine the identity crisis burners are going to go through if it turns out to be true?
