Dirty Beaches clean up at SXSW

Vancouver one-man-band Dirty Beaches has an impeccable sense of style.

His image and attitude pays tribute to his Taiwanese father’s experiences as a greaser musician in the sixties, but gets modernized through the use of a looping pedal, guitar skronk, way too much reverb, and a tinny drum machine.

Think of the kind of dark and twisted rockabilly that David Lynch should use in all his films. He’s often compared to Suicide and Nick Cave, but there’s something way more unique and haunting about him than those reference points can sum up properly.

Even this clip of him playing outside in the sunshine during SXSW feels spooky.
