The coolest people have always been those who don’t necessarily know just how cool they are, whereas the ones who walk around knowing they’re the shit are, essentially, obnoxious. This debut full-length from artsy Montreal electro-hipsters Dutchess Says makes me think they belong in the latter category.
Abrasive, defiant and almost antagonistic in presentation, Perchoirs is rife with a punk aesthetic filtered through drum programming and scathing noise while also being nearly as disjointed as the individual songs. While there are enjoyable moments, and the vocals are often satisfyingly crazed, there’s something suspiciously “of the moment” here. The whole electro/dance/noise-terror thing that Dutchess Says really seem to be pandering to ultimately sounds contrived, uninspired and even a little insincere.
Dutchess Says rocks the Wrongbar Friday (April 4).
