Get ready for Canada Day with this Toronto-focused fireworks playlist

What better day to celebrate Canadian music than on Canada Day? Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West) is doing just that, with a high-energy soundtrack to its annual fireworks display over Lake Ontario at 10:40 pm on Friday (July 1).

We couldn’t help but notice that the eight-song playlist has a nice Toronto focus. Included are R&B superstar The Weeknd, soulful pop upstart Alessia Cara and good ol’ Stratford boy Justin Bieber, though it’s the inclusion of old-school new-wavers Martha and the Muffins that really floats our boat.

Ottawa’s A Tribe Called Red are another inspired choice, especially as the producer/DJ crew have just released a mini-documentary, The Manawan Sessions, about the making of their forthcoming album slated for the fall. And of course you can’t go wrong with Celine Dion or Halifax’s Classified.

Ahead of the fireworks display, Harbourfront Centre also hosts a concert by beloved children’s performers Sharon & Bram at 2 pm, and multilingual supergroup Nomadic Massive at 9:30 pm, both at the concert stage.
