Greenberg’s Jewel

Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg is only one step up from the depressing depths of a Todd Solondz movie. But one inspiring scene to take away from it is a minor cameo from East L.A. weirdo Ramona Gonzalez.

Gonzalez is better known as Nite Jewel, a keyboardist and producer who turned in one of the best albums of 2009. Unfortunately, her wares have mostly slid under the radar. (Coincidently, she just released this remix of a Caribou track.)

Her film debut comes in the form of an innocuous and forgettable quip to Ben Stiller during the party scene of Greenberg. For that, though, she got her name in the opening credits.

Her song Suburbia gets an equally brief cameo, playing in the background during the gallery opening scene. But, as a tacit stamp of approval, she still gets a spot on the official soundtrack. Download the song here.

She’s the lone contemporary artist on the soundtrack aside from James Murphy, the head of DFA Records and brains behind LCD Soundsystem. That’s because the music for the film was curated by James Murphy – who also made a small appearance in the movie.

What does this all add up to? Well, nothing really. She’ll barely register among viewers of the movie her presence probably only noted by those of us who are already devotees.

But the fact that the tastemakers behind the film – either Baumbach or Murphy, or both – cared enough to seek her out has to be a sign of good things to come. This is the sort of stuff cult heroes are made of, right?
At any rate, it makes for some good trivia.[rssbreak]
