Maybe because they maintain such a committed fan base, all the various “-billy” sub-genres (rocka-, horror-, psycho-) are subject to those cranky old dogmatic style rules. In other words, things can get kinda redundant. Thankfully, Horrorpops continue to broaden their musical scope with an impressive tossed salad of greaser rock, punk, goth and new wave, with fleshed-out production and synths, all the while keeping a solid grounding in rockabilly.
A conceptual album of sorts based on classic Hollywood noir flicks, Kiss shows off consistent, catchy songwriting that prominently features punk-meets-femme-fatale singer Patricia Day, whose smoky rasp adds to the record’s dark, dramatic effect.
Horrorpops play tonight (Thursday, October 16) at the Opera House.
