The Zombies
One of the best music articles of the year has been American writer Daniel Ralston’s They’re Not Here: The True Story Of The Fake Zombies, about a group of American musicians (two of whom later joined ZZ Top) who toured the United States in 1969 pretending they were the by-then-defunct British psych rockers.
You could argue that the widely read story reignited interest in the original band, but the truth is, they’ve been on the comeback trail intermittently since the early 2000s. They played a transcendent headlining show at Austin Psych Fest in 2014, and even released a new album, Still Got That Hunger, in October 2015.
And now the organ-fuelled band who penned Time Of The Season, Tell Her No and She’s Not There celebrate the 50th anniversary of their 1968 cult classic Odessey & Oracle, ranked number 100 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time, with a pass through the Danforth Music Hall. They’ve been touring it since last year, but this is the first Toronto stop – and your final chance.
The tour features all four surviving members: Colin Blundstone on lead vocals, Rod Argent on keyboards and vocals, Chris White on bass and vocals and Hugh Grundy on drums, plus Jim Rodford, Steve Rodford and Tom Toomey. You can also use the opportunity to snag a new coffee table book of stories, artwork and handwritten lyrics concerning the making of Odessey & Oracle.
