Originally composed by Sunn 0)))’s Stephen O’Malley and Peter Rehberg for a French theatre production, KTL’s drawn-out, textured dronescapes have evolved past being accompaniments. Occupying a space in the murk and fog between drone and electronic noise, 2 explores the coldness and musical violence inherent in black metal. The lengthy pieces slowly unravel into unnerving, monolithic statements that antagonize while threatening to hypnotize.
While it might all just sound like pretentious noise, the music’s emotional resonance is unavoidable and captivating – and highly experiential. And since the record was made in a former French abattoir and a 16th-century manor just to get the proper effect, that makes sense.
