Lenni Jabour is a piano prodigy from the Royal Conservatory who also did the Ryerson theatre/acting deal and has played with people ranging from Hawksley Workman to, um, Britney Spears. Maybe it’s the glockenspiel and the melodica, or maybe it’s her demure French vocals (she does Anglais as well), but half this album is like a vaudevillian cabaret of the macabre. The carnival feel is tempered with slow, piano-driven ballads that are too schmaltzy and pretentious and quickly bring down what seemed to work at the beginning.
Jabour & co. get romantic at the Drake Tuesday (February 14).
