The brainchild of fiddling French brothers Eric and Olivier Slabiak, Les Yeux Noirs (the Black Eyes, en anglais) build on traditional Yiddish and Roma music, with a healthy dose of drums and electric guitars to give it a contemporary rock edge. This deceptively simple approach really grounds the music, giving the songs a lot of heft and weight while allowing the brothers Slabiak to go off on intricate tangents. Their Yiddish and French vocals add to the wild sense of wonder in the songs, which are alternately tragic and joyous yet as a whole are like one big shout-out to those who always find the good in life.
Les Yeux Noirs play George Weston Recital Hall Saturday (January 21).
