NOW critics picks: Outdoor concerts

Oklahoma weirdo rockers the Flaming Lips headline the Molson Amphitheatre (909 Lake Shore West) July 8. Supporting them are indie pop heavyweights Spoon and local heroes Tokyo Police Club, which should make for a memorable night under the stars. $29.50-$52.50. 416-870-8000.

Originally, the heavy metal triple bill of Slayer, Megadeth and Testament was slated to perform last November, was postponed to February and then pushed back again to July 29 at the Molson Amphitheatre (909 Lake Shore West). While the delays have been frustrating for headbangers, at least now you’ll be able to get your rock on outdoors instead of being stuck in a club. $22.50-$69.50, tickets from February 19 show honoured. 416-870-8000.

Pride Week (June 25 to July 4) always offers some of best possible, most fun dancing to music in the great outdoors. This year much of the buzz is about 80s pop diva Cyndi Lauper, who performs at Queen’s Park for Dyke Day (July 3). Earlier the same day, at the TD Wellesley Stage, R&B singer Kelis is sure to be a big draw, not to mention hot DJs all week all over the city. Check pridetoronto.com for more info.

There’s plenty of excellent music happening every weekend at Harbourfront (235 Queens Quay West), but make sure you check out the annual Beats, Breaks & Culture festival (July 9-11). Headlining this year is Kid Koala with the Slew, a new project featuring the turntable terror jamming with the former rhythm section of Wolfmother. Most combinations of rock and hip-hop kind of suck, but this one is actually worth checking out.
