Wicked and "Weird" Al
It was inevitable that Dare To Be Stupid: A Tribute To "Weird" Al Yankovic - Friday night's party thrown by Ninja High School's Matt Collins at the Bagel - would be a huge success. The night reeled in a mini-mob due to the roster of local talents slated to cover the prince of parody's songs. (Collins says he'll keep his Al tribute format for In Search Of, a planned themed monthly event at the Bagel.)
Highlights included the Adorables' button-cute Melanie cover and the Dean Williams's demented electro rendering of Eat It. But the evening's shining moment was Laura Barrett accompanying her own sensitive vocals on thumb piano. Between acts, DJs Wes Allen (who, with Dan Vila , runs soul/funk/garage rock monthly Doing It To Death at Thymeless ) and Matt Blair spun originals spoofed by Al.
The Bagel keeps getting hipper, booking shit-cool bands like No Dynamics , who are playing a two-night EP release there August 19 (with Awesome and Tradition ) and 20 (with Pony Da Look and Panzram's Ghost ).
Primp and proper
Squeezed through a sidewalk full of fashionable kids and into Stones Place for Saturday's Big Primpin' party. I wanted to see if the gay hiphop bash thrown by DJs Rory Them Finest - who DJs photographer Ryan Allan's That's A RAP exhibit closing party Saturday (August 13) at Xpace - Francey Fitness , Tuff Luv and Minuh Care was keeping its status as Parkdale's premier behemoth jam. And is it? Oh, fo' sho'. With their can't-miss selection of club bangers, Team Primpin' ensured no rug was left uncut. As if the music weren't already fucking hot enough, they had to go and call in Providence, RI's Certified Bananas , a cutting-edge DJ duo who seamlessly merge indie rock loops with Dirty South a cappellas (I'm generalizing), who rolled through and mashed that potato up real good.
Da Bomb Prom
After jettin' from Primpin', we hit the Gladstone on our stumble back. Fake Prom was still on, and hot 20-somethings were clustered outside, smoking in pastel tuxedos and black evening gowns. Hopefully that crusty Superintendent Reibling wasn't too hard on his grad class this year. Wait, my bad - Amy Butoiske 's decorations made the prom look so authentic, I keep forgetting it was fake. The alleged "Superintendent" was actually Dylan Reibling - organizer, PR man and co-DJ of the whole cheeky affair with DJ Principal MacDonald ( Joel MacDonald ). The Fake Prom band, composed of Jake Chisholm , Big Al , Joel McConvey and Al Mousseau of math rockers the Ontario Power Generation , was also bang-on.
Drum and Basso
Monday night, took a trip down to Alto Basso , where I was reminded that people aren't afraid to dance to well-mixed classic hiphop like Heltah Skeltah, Ol' Dirty and A Tribe Called Quest. Big up to DJs Nana and Fase (who also rocks Footwork Tuesdays at Andy Poolhall and Supermarket Saturdays with DJ John Kong at Supermarket ) for kicking mad flava in ya ear every week.
