Smoked-out Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa plays the second of two sold-out shows tonight at the Sound Academy. Over the phone, we chopped it up with Mr. Black and Yellow about the MTV Video Music Awards, and working with Big Sean and Curren$y, Norwegian production team Stargate, and current squeeze Amber Rose.[briefbreak]
With two Toronto shows lined up, obviously you’ve got a strong fanbase here. What do you love about this city?
I just like how involved they are out there. A lot of these people been supporting me since the beginning of my career and I did a lot of early shows around the area, so…
You were all over the MTV Video Music Awards. Got any behind-the-scenes dirt from the night?
No, it was all pretty cool. I was drunk, and yeah, it was cool, man. Nothing really spectacular happened behind the scenes. Nobody got hit with a bottle or anything.
Did you do any networking, meet any people you’d always wanted to – that sort of thing?
Nah, I actually kept it kind of low-key. I went through, did my press shit, and then cooled out. Lil Wayne was sitting like right in front of me, so that made me feel kind of important.
Your debut, Rolling Papers, was a big hit for you. Have you started thinking about a follow-up?
Yeah I’ve started thinking about it. But we’re still working this album. Rolling Papers is still fucking peoples’ heads up.
Will you continue to work with Stargate?
Yeah, absolutely. With Black and Yellow, I was the first rapper that they worked with, and that was my first big hit, so we’re gonna take it to the next level.
Tell me about working with Big Sean on your next mixtape.
That was just some fun we had during the summer. Me and Curren$y had released a mixtape called How Fly. So it was coming up on the one year anniversary, and we wanted to do something special, do something cool for the fans and everybody who supported. So we were making songs every day of the business week, and added Big Sean to it just make it really proper.
Can I ask any questions about your relationship with Amber Rose, or is that off-limits?
Nah, you can ask.
Is there any truth to the rumor that you guys will be working in the studio together soon?
Well, you know, anything that I say that I’m working on is just, like, what I’ll be doing in life. So it’s bound to happen, you know what I’m saying? I got a studio in my house, and people love Amber, so it’d only be right – naturally, something’s going to happen.
Does she rap, or sing?
She does everything.
Are there wedding bells in the future for you guys, you think?
It’s just gonna happen when it’s supposed to happen. Our relationship is more than just publicity. But we’re just moving our pace and letting people keep up with us.
You’ve been catching some heat on the Internet after a picture of you and Amber onstage together came out. What would you say to people who are hating on that stuff?
I do what I want! That’s my woman.
