Raising The Fawn has always been John Crossingham’s beast, but The Maginot Line appears to be more a full-on group effort, and the results are eerily spectacular. Maybe it’s his work in Broken Social Scene that has brought out a communal attitude, but Crossingham lets both Dylan Green and Scott Remila into his world. The stark minimalism may fly in the face of his BSS amigos, but it’s hard to deny the effect these powerful, at times chilling, song fragments have on the listener. And that’s what they are – fragments, pieces of full songs that are fleshed out by the band on the fly and seem to congeal only after a few spins. Even then, they’re hardly songs in any traditional sense: new discoveries and meanings emerge with almost every chord change and cymbal strike. Demented, sloppy, brilliant, and above all a great way to spend three-quarters of an hour. Raising the Fawn take over the Horseshoe Saturday (April 29).
