What club do you hit after the gig?
"The two jazz clubs I used to go to have closed. On a good note, I've just been told that Pat Taylor, one of the producers of the Downtown Jazz Festival, is opening a new jazz club, the Courthouse, that sounds sure to keep the fire burning. Of course, I've spent many great nights in the Rex."
Favourite Toronto artist?
"Oscar Peterson. Having the honour to record in Toronto and play a concert at NYC Town Hall with him was one of the highlights of my musical experience."
What was your biggest misconception about Toronto?
"That the winter weather is worse than it really is."
What do you love most about Toronto? What do you hate about the city?
"I love the open, friendly vibe of the people, and Toronto is a jazz city, with a great love for the music. Hate? That word doesn't even come up when I think Toronto."
Hotel of choice?
"The Cambridge Suites - down the street from Massey Hall."
What do you do on your day off?
"Relax and check out Yonge and Queen West shops."
Most memorable border crossing experience heading to Toronto?
"There have been a lot of long waits at the airport while they check work permits, but the worst was a 2 am tour bus crossing from New York with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker during a blizzard, when someone had forgotten to send the permits and the officer dealing with us was apparently having a bad night."
