Shawn Mendes will receive this year’s Allan Slaight Award from Canada’s Walk of Fame.
The honour has been given out for the past six years to young Canadian musicians who have had a positive impact on the industry.
The 17-year-old Toronto singer/songwriter, who’s opening for Taylor Swift on her 1989 tour – playing the Rogers Centre Friday and Saturday (October 2 and 3) – will collect the award at the Sony Centre on November 7 during the Canada’s Walk Of Fame ceremony. It comes with $10,000.
Mendes, who started as a viral video star, signed to Universal Music Canada in 2014. His debut album, Handwritten, hit number one in Canada and the United States, making him the youngest artist in nearly five years to have a number-one album on the Billboard 200 chart in the U.S.
Past Allan Slaight Award winners include the Weeknd, Drake, Melanie Fiona, Carly Rae Jepsen and Nikki Yanofsky.
