Sonic Boom’s new digs

After 13 years in the Annex, Sonic Boom is relocating their massive store to a higher foot traffic area in Chinatown. Starting Sept. 27, those looking to buy hard copies of their favourite albums will have to go to the Robertson Building, located at 215 Spadina Ave., between Dundas and Queen.

The space is enormous, with plenty of room for the free shows their customers have come to expect. The basement, where the live music will continue to be performed, is actually larger than the last one, at about 10,000 square feet.

“It has that nice basement feel, yet at the same time it has a nice open feeling,” said owner Jeffrey Barber.

When Honest Ed’s owners announced in July of 2013 that the building was for sale, Barber says he immediately called his agent and started looking for a new space. He’d had to relocate the business before, from its original location beside the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, and didn’t want to get caught in an awkward situation. When Barber found out this space was available, he had to take it.

“There aren’t many spaces of this size in Toronto and I wanted to be proactive,” he said.

Sonic Boom closed their second, smaller location on Augusta Ave. in August, knowing that their new space would be so close by that it wouldn’t make much sense to have both.

“It’s really going to be the same Sonic Boom, just in a much nicer place,” Barber said in a press release. “The location is incredible, the size is nearly the same as our current location and the building itself is absolutely beautiful.”

On Saturday, Sonic Boom will be giving away free T-shirts with purchase while supplies last.
