THE LUYAS at Sneaky Dee’s (431 College), Friday (June 14), 1 am. NXNE wristband or $15. nxne.com.
Since playing their first show in 2006, the Luyas have released three solid albums, including their most recent take on orchestral pop, Animator (Paper Bag). They’ve been long-listed for the Polaris Prize and share French horn player Pietro Amato with Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre.
Factor in their Montreal home base – where indie buzz bands are made – and it’s surprising that they haven’t blown up. Lucky for concertgoers, this means they’re still playing venues where we can enjoy their music semi-intimately.
At this year’s NXNE, where they share a bill with folk weirdo Julian Lynch, Jessie Stein’s cleverly demure voice is sure to mesmerize atop the band’s brass-inflected art-pop arrangements.
The Luyas have all the right pieces to become the next big Montreal thing. Catch them up close while you can.
If you like the Luyas, also check out Program at Creatures Creating, tonight (Thursday, June 13), midnight, NXNE wristband or $12 or Still Corners at the Horseshoe (Friday, June 14), 10 pm, NXNE wristband or $15.
