Tim Putnam’s voice is that of the downtrodden anti-hero who never had the balls to ask a girl to the prom, and he almost always sounds like he’s doing everything he can to hold back the tears until the end of the song. That Albatross doesn’t come off like a total tearjerker is partly due to the handful of semi-rocking tunes like Red Drop and In Waves, but it’s mostly because of the tension Putnam delivers with his paranoid quaver, and the band’s unique ability to build dramatic sounds with minimal instrumentation, creating a very full, lush and textured sound that is not dissimilar to Will Sheff’s Okkervil River. A fully realized set, Albatross is the sound of a band that has truly arrived.
