THE STRANGE BOYS at The Garrison. Sat, Jun 19. myspace.com/thestrangeboys Rating: NNN
Given their interest in 60s garage, country and blues, Austin’s Strange Boys are often put in the same category as the Black Lips and King Khan, but they’re a bit too laid-back to be held to the same live standard.
Testing out new material with recently-added saxophonist Jenna Thornhill (formerly of Mika Miko) the young band displayed a few glimpses of soul, especially on an upbeat set-closing James Brown cover, but otherwise their lazy demeanor left a lot to be desired. Good, but not great.
