By traditional music industry standards, Toronto experimental R&B act the Weeknd are doing everything wrong - and yet everything's going so right. They (or is it just one guy?) refuse to do press, but that hasn't stopped the whole world from begging them for interviews over the past six months.
They don't have an official release or even a label, yet they've made it onto the Polaris Prize short list (the first free album to do so). They're booked to play their debut gig July 31 at the Molson Amphitheatre opening for Drake and Rick Ross (!), but then announced a last-minute headlining show at the Mod Club Sunday (July 24), which sold out immediately despite the fact that you could only buy tickets in person at a shoe store.
With this much mystery and hype, there's a real chance that the group's official unveiling will disappoint. But that won't stop fans from lining up outside the club all day for a chance to get in. Easily the most anticipated first show by a Toronto act. Ever.
