WORDBURGLAR at C’est What (67 Front East, 416-867-9499), Saturday (June 14), 11 pm. $10, free w/ NXNE wristband (see page 62). Rating: NNNNN
Mild-??mannered Silver Snail employee by day, microphone-??mashing MC by night, this former Halifax rapper has been building a great name for himself since 2003. He occupies a space between the peak albums of Marshall Mathers and 80s-??era Weird Al Yankovic while “burgling words and gurgling turds,” as he says.
Adept at jumping from stand-??up comedian/actor to aggressive battle rapper at a moment’s notice, Wordburglar (real name Sean Jordan) is yet another hidden Canadian multi-??talent who could easily blow up soon somewhere, somehow, some way.
Quannum MC Pigeon John, one of URB Magazine’s Next 100, collab-??ed with SJ, as did beatsmith extraordinaire Fresh Kils, another of Canada’s best-??kept secrets. YouTube features the ambitious yet low-??budget short-??film-??style video for Cream Of Wheat, one of the releases off Wordburglar’s sophomore 2006 Hand’Solo/Urbnet Records album, Burglaritis. Or Google his Grandpa Funnybook and enjoy the merriment of his witty Stan Lee parody. (“I created special characters like Mom-??nipotent, the Omnipotent Mom!”)
With his third LP, reportedly called 3rdburglar, in the works, this hilarious, hyperactive hip-??hop head is poised to succeed. And he’s even made his own comic book (no surprise given his day job).
