Could the collaborative six-song album YokoKimThurston (out September 25 on Chimera) by Yoko Ono and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore be this year’s Loutallica horror show? Probably not, seeing as all three artists share equally avant-garde sensibilities they’ve been honing for decades. Expect to be challenged sonically and conceptually.
Don’t expect a tour, however. The collab is just one of several new – and separate – projects the recently divorced Gordon and Moore have on the go. Gordon takes her band Body/Head with free-noise guitarist Bill Nace on tour throughout Europe in September. Moore, who recently joined black metal supergroup Twilight in addition to forming Chelsea Light Moving, goes solo in Australia in October.
Seventy-nine-year-old Ono, for her part, just collaborated with crystal-maker Swarovski to make a key-shaped pendant meant, she says, to “open your mind to the future.”
