Should anti-Muslim bloggers be putting up a headstone for Aqsa Parvez?
As of right now, Parvez, a Muslim girl murdered just over a year ago, rests under a small marker, numbered 774, in Meadowvale Cemetery in Brampton. But, over the holidays, blogger Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs began a fund to buy the deceased girl a headstone.
A noble gesture on the surface, but one that should be viewed with a full plate of skepticism. Atlas Shrugs is a fiercely right-wing site which calls Islam a "death cult" in the same post it solicits money for Parvez's headstone. So, naturally, blame for the Parvez murder rests on the shoulders of Islam, not on the girl's father, who has been charged in her death, or domestic violence, which obviously affects more than just Muslim women.
The fact the investigation into her death is nowhere near its conclusion is neglected. Geller is treating Parvez's death as a symptom of the evils of Islam, and this headstone is a symbol of that. It started with this all-caps directive:
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE. THIS DELICIOUS GIRL WHO FOUGHT TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE. AQSA PARVEZ IS BURIED IN AN UNMARKED GRAVE. NUMBER 774. IT'S AS IF SHE NEVER EXISTED.DAMN THEM!
Emphasis, and the use of of the word "delicious" to describe a 16-year-old, hers. And then:
To be a woman is Islam ... is to not exist.
Clearly, there is more at play here than a meaningful tribute. To put it lightly, this is a political statement rather than a genuine show of respect for the dead. To put it less lightly, this is an attention-seeking blogger looking to broadcast her anti-Islam views using tragic murder of a young girl.
But do the motives matter?
The cemetery, according to the site Jihad Watch, is allowing the bloggers to purchase the headstone. If the Parvez family asks Meadowvale Cemetery to remove it, the bloggers vow to fight for their headstone or place it elsewhere.
