A sudden Tory attack of eco conscience?

Rating: NNNNN

Nothing like an E-coli disaster to get the Tories singing a different eco tune.

Witness the Tories’ reaction this week to the Canadian Institute for Environmental Law and Policy’s (CIELAP) report outlining a monstrous 138-per-cent increase in hazardous waste imports from the U.S. between 1994 and 98.

Environment minister Dan Newman’s office was quick to announce that regs are being prepared to deal specifically with concerns raised by the report.

Newman adviser Hal Vincent says it has nothing to do with the PR beating the government’s been taking over Walkerton.

But cynics will point out that the Tories sniffed when CIELAP first recommended hazardous waste regs back in 98.
