A Toronto resident called out a major grocery chain after a sale price for coconut milk did not make any sense.
Toronto lawyer Devan Marr took to X and shared what he encountered during a trip to Loblaws.
“So, let me get this straight Loblaws, it’s $2.29 for one, but $5 for two? So it costs 10% more to buy them together?” he tweeted on Saturday.
This means that buying two alone would set you back $4.58 before tax, meanwhile as a bundle, you’d spend an additional 42 cents.
According to Marr, the Loblaws in question is located at Lakeshore and Leslie.
Users online were not impressed.
“The government is too busy allowing monopolies like Loblaws to thrive and gouge Canadian consumers, but I am sure if a consumer watchdog was checking their store it would find these ‘errors’ all over the place,” one user wrote.
“This happens often. A few math skills come in handy,” someone else said.
The company reached out to Marr in the comments saying: “Hello Devan, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We can confirm this is an error. Can you please share the store location? We’d like to review this appropriately.”
Now Toronto also reached out to Loblaws and a spokesperson confirmed it was indeed a signage error.
“It’s been corrected. Should customers see a signage error, they’re encouraged to speak with the store’s customer service team or an available colleague,” the company said in an email statement on Monday.
