Better Pape than never

The TTC’s long awaited station modernization plans are finally getting underway with the first station tabbed for a facelift announced this week and it’s…wait for it…Pape.

Good choice. Pape’s been looking a little, well, rundown. Years of wear and tear will do that.

Pape is a major transit point along the Bloor-Danforth line, but you’d never know it from the dismal-looking exterior.

No offence to Timbits lovers, but for me the giant Tim Hortons signs stuck by the entrance mashes up any visual appeal the 60’s era station has left.

The $20 million redo, scheduled to begin this fall, will help include improvements to the floors, walls and ceilings, brighter lighting, new elevators and barrier free turnstiles, as well as, streetscaping and landscaping to spruce up the outside

The bonus: some public art – etched granite frieze along the outside wall, and digital glass mirror displays on the subway platforms and concourse level.

More important for travelers crushed by crowding is the fact a second exit and larger waiting and concourse areas are also being contemplated.

The changes at Pape have been a long time in coming. Originally scheduled for completion in 2008, the project had to be delayed two years because of funding shortfalls.

The artists renderings don’t show it, but it looks like Tims is staying. The cash-strapped TTC needs the rent money.[rssbreak]
