Came for Diddy, stayed for LiLo, moved to MGMT

“Excuse me. We came here to see some Diddy,” snarked one confused party guest at eTalk’s massive Festival Party as co-hosts Ben Mulroney and Tanya Kim repeatedly introduced the headlining hip hopper only to have dead silence and screens of colour bars appear in his place.

If she had looked at her watch, she might have noticed it was still a good 10 minutes before the live broadcast was scheduled to start (repeating tonight on Star! at 8 pm) and the technical difficulties were actually the producers pre-taping audience reactions and hyping up the crowd.

Two-nine-nine Queen West was full of high expectations last night but everyone seemed satisfied with the complete CTV-ification of the party once known as Festival Schmooze. DJ Samantha Ronson spun with confirmed-via-Myspace girlfriend Lindsay Lohan chain smoking at her side. DSquared2 designers Dean and Dan Caten tested out the red carpet in preparation for their Fashion Television event tomorrow. Upstairs, stragglers from Variety‘s 10 Producers to Watch event rubbed shoulders with CTV news anchors who walked freely around the party’s four floors like they owned the place (oh wait, they kinda do).

Other boldface spots included model Daria Werbowy, Brian and Mila Mulroney and Sir Richard Branson en route to his own Virgin Unite party at Muzik.

From downtown to uptown, we hit Holt Renfrew‘s annual TIFF party co-hosted this year by Converse, designer John Varvatos and GQ magazine. The basement level of the Yorkville store was converted into a New York diner complete with vinyl banquets, mini hot dogs and MGMT playing a private, pre-V-fest gig.

Guests gathered at the base of the store’s escalator to watch Jeremy Piven, Gael Garcia Bernal, Dean and Dan and Sophia Bush descend into the bash. Bush sparkled in a silver elastic dress but was smitten herself with another guest’s gutsy fashion statement. Our own fake TIFF fashionista, Jan Jathathay (actually Torontoist and Shedoesthecity‘s Sarah Nicole Prickett), was the style hit of the party in a cream cocktail dress and a fan of feathers clipped in her hair.

Star sightings: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Guy Ritchie all being gifted Joe Fresh clothes for their kiddies from the Tastemakers Lounge at the Intercontinental Hotel. Passchendaele actor Joe Dinicol browsing the Strellson booth and mentioning the film’s cast had to throw back some Jagger shots to get themselves into the partying mood after their opening night screening which, he admitted, was a bit of downer.
