Canada Post is stopping home deliveries: Here’s when you can expect changes in your neighbourhood

Canada Post will begin phasing out home mail delivery across the GTA, starting in Etobicoke and rolling out to other neighbourhoods over the next five years. Here’s how and when you’ll be affected.

What to know

  • Etobicoke residents with M9V and M9W postal codes will be the first to make the switch on Nov. 16.
  • Durham and Peel regions—including Ajax, Pickering, Mississauga, and Brampton—will follow between September and November 2027.
  • The change will reach North York and downtown Toronto by September 2031, with the full transition expected to take five years.
  • Most parcels will fit into community mailboxes, but oversized packages or those needing signatures will still be delivered to your door or held at a post office.

Waiting for a package? You may soon have to leave home to get it. Canada Post is phasing out home delivery across the GTA with neighbourhoods set to make the switch at different times.

Etobicoke is the first GTA area rolling out this change, expected on Nov. 16, specifically for homes with M9V and M9W postal codes.

Going forward, Etobicoke residents will have to pick up their mail from community mailboxes.

That means no more envelopes and parcels left on your porch.

For seniors and people with mobility challenges, Canada Post says it will work directly to provide accessible options.

According to a Canada Post news release, nearly three out of four Canadian addresses already receive mail and parcels through some form of centralized delivery, and this change will help convert about four million addresses that still receive door-to-door delivery.

Other GTA neighbourhoods can expect a slower rollout that may take up to five years.

Next up are Durham and Peel regions, starting off in Ajax, Pickering, Mississauga and Brampton, from September through Nov., 2027.

The last areas include parts of North York and most of downtown Toronto in Sept. 2031.

More than 80 per cent of parcels Canada Post delivers fit into a community mailbox’s individual compartment or a dedicated parcel compartment. Parcels that don’t fit or that require a signature will still be delivered to the door or held for pickup at a nearby post office.
