A massive weekend of WWE is coming up in Toronto and while some mystery remains over who will be in the ring, there’s a Canadian star waiting in the wings.

Chelsea Green, one of the country’s biggest names in the sport, is touted to appear in the global brand’s highly anticipated Elimination Chamber at the Rogers Centre on March 1.

The 33-year-old took the wrestling world by storm when she rejoined WWE in 2023. Green left the franchise in 2021 after breaking her wrist during a Team SmackDown series.

Now, with just  a few weeks to go before Elimination Chamber lands in Toronto, she’s only one match away from securing her spot in the ring.

Hailing from Calgary, Green is set to face off against WWE star Naomi on Friday. Naomi is no stranger to the chamber, but Green, who is the Women’s United States Champion, is looking to book her spot in the “twisted steel” for the first time, so Now Toronto caught up with her ahead of the qualifier.

Green’s ascension to the apex of wrestling began in Calgary, where she first started training. Though her rise to stardom has been far from linear, her love of the craft has never wavered.

“When you sit in the crowd and you look at the people in the ring, you can always find yourself in somebody, whether it’s because they’re an athlete or a high-flyer, or a comedian or a dancer or a gymnast, we have a little bit of everything, so that is really what drew me personally to it,” she said.

Green’s wrestling persona and ability to shift her disposition embody the theatrics that lure millions of people to WWE.

But, over the years she has evolved, honing not only her physical skills but her character, which she says enabled her to find “a really amazing balance” that allows her and her colleagues to focus on entertaining.

“Now, of course I take acting classes, I’ve learnt the importance of a back story and of just building [my] character up,” Green explained, adding that to switch from one to another she needs an “origin story” to work with.

“I have a lot of fun with that,” she added with a giggle.

Green told Now that her proudest career moment is becoming the longest reigning United States Women’s Champion, gesturing to her belt as she spoke.

“Obviously, this beautiful piece of jewellery beside me is my proudest moment,” she said.

Nonetheless, like any athlete, Green has overcome her fair share of hurdles. She broke her arm three times in less than two years, which took a toll both physically and mentally.

“We as performers love what we do, it’s not just work, it’s our hobby, it’s our outlet, it’s our passion, it’s all of our creative outlets, and to have that ripped away from you when you get injured is really really hard,” she said, adding that it’s tough, as a competitor to have to watch matches from the couch.

But, the couch is exactly where millions of fans will be watching Elimination Chamber from on March 1 thanks to WWE’s new $5-billion deal with Netflix.

It’s yet to be decided if Green will grace the screen then, but the deciding match is set for Friday night at 8:00 p.m.

Elimination Chamber takes place on March. 1 at The Rogers Centre, and will air live on Netflix.
