Reactions are pouring in after Mark Carney won the Liberal leadership race in a landslide to become Canada’s next prime minister.

The former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor clinched the win on the first ballot with 85.9 per cent of the vote.

Carney beat out former finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, former cabinet minister Karina Gould, and businessman and former Liberal MP Frank Baylis.

Carney was a frontrunner in the race to replace Justin Trudeau who announced his resignation in January.

On Sunday, Trudeau tweeted he leaves the party with “the same belief in hope and hard work as when I started.”

It is unclear when Carney will officially take office.

Online, politicians are starting to react to Carney’s win.

Ontario Liberal Party Leader Bonnie Crombie, who lost the provincial election earlier this month, congratulated Carney on his victory on X.

Meanwhile, federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh congratulated Carney on X and said despite them disagreeing on ideas and policies, “we should always stand united in protecting our country from the threat posed by Donald Trump.”

And Canadians are weighing in on the new leader, with some saying an election needs to be called now.

“Brilliant choice. I was proud to vote for Mr…err…Prime Minister Carney,” one X user said.

“Congrats to the new Liberal Prime Minister of the nation who will NEVER. Be the 51st State, Mark Carney! Canada, stay strong,” another user said.

“Canadians don’t want an unelected Prime Minister. Call an election now,” one X user said.

“Call an election this guy wasn’t voted in let the people vote for the prime minister,” another chimed in.

Carney could call an election any time but an election could also be triggered in late March, when a vote of no confidence in the government is expected in Parliament.
